Like most piano teachers, I’m always looking for ways to make practicing scales a little more attractive to students. Scales are just so handy because they really solidify your piano technique and make it so much easier for your hands to travel around the piano. And, most importantly, they are the foundation of so many music theory concepts that students are learning about on the piano.
To many students, scales easily become a chore. So, I challenged my students to learn all 12 major scales. I rewarded them with an awesome t-shirt!
Nearly all of my students were up for the challenge. My beginning students played 5 finger scales, some students did 2 handed tetrachord scales and most did 1 octave scales.
At our end of the year recital, we celebrated with a cake that matched our t-shirts!
